Guardian Angels Coming to Indian Country

The Guardian Angels have long been synonymous with the inner cities of New York, Chicago and Orlando, where violent crime is often a way of life. But, according to an article published yesterday in Char-Koosta, the crime-fighting organization is coming to Indian Country.

The first-ever Guardian Angels chapter to be located on an Indian reservation will be launching this weekend, Char-Koosta reported. Based on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, a vast reservation in eastern Montana and home to about 6,000, the new chapter will train approximately 50 recruits.

The main reason for starting the chapter? Gangs.

Chauncey Whitwright III, vice chairman of the Wolf Point Community Organization, told Char-Koosta: “There are all kinds of gangs roaming around up here. Our kids are in danger, they’re being influenced, they’re being targeted. It’s going on every day of the week ... and they’re busy recruiting.”

Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels’ founder, said the chapter will be a model for other reservations in the United States and Canada.

  1. Learning about the Guardian Angels coming on to our reservations made my day and will be thinking about this grand occasion the rest of next week, next month and throughout the new year. Our youth will identify themselves with the good of the Guardian Angels as we are innately good, spiritual people. We have the spirit of Crazy Horse, Wooden Leg, Chief Gall, the fighting Cheyennes, Navajos, Pope (New Mexico) and all of the warriors of each Tribe who fought so valiently for our way of life, our lands and now for our very survival. Our youth are good and need the role models of the Guardian Angels. I was hoping that such a grand group would permeate our homelands. It is my hope that the Guardian Angels would come on to the Standing Rock Sioux and Pine Ridge reservations where the crime rate is extremely high. Our youth are committing suicides when they have so much to live for. Their tribal governments have NO VISION, they are all heartless and I feel have been handed over to a reprobate minds. A majority of the council members are uneducated, but are very well educated in helping themselves to their tribal coffers. Standing Rock and Pine Ridge are leaders in How to Destroy Your People With Your Eyes Closed. Just read "Unshared Disgrace" Feb. 1989 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer or go to citizens equal rights alliance (CERA). Yes, Guardian Angels is outrightly answer to my prayer and wish. They are next to rebuilding our people, communities and restoration of our rightful heritage.
