Harvard Kennedy School Students Draw Attention to Conditions on Indian Reservations in the Dakotas

Native American Caucus students at the Harvard Kennedy School are taking action in response to the inadequate national response to the crisis on Indian reservations in the Dakotas due to severe ice storms and freezing temperatures, said a press release issued today by the school.

Last weekend, a powerful snow and ice storm hit the region, taking down power lines. Thousands of South Dakotans, with residents of the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Indian reservations among them, are without power and water. Worse still, no one seems to know when they will be restored.

The Chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has declared a state of emergency for his community and is calling for immediate assistance.

The Native American Caucus students have launched an awareness-raising campaign to help bring much needed monetary assistance to the tribes.

To assist the tribes, contact Stacy LaCompte at Wakpa Sica Reconciliation Place at (605) 280-8588.

  5. Come on Black Eagle "Obama" look in your own back yard. The Sioux and Crow battles ended 120 years ago.

  6. The Obama administration appears not to be paying attention to the needs of the tribes in the US. Yeah! we give to other poor countries outside of the US. Most of the tribes have always been very poor but it appears that our severe situations and conditions especially health care needs are very much ignored. The sad fact is that most of the non-natives are occupying Indian land and getting wealthy of it. The only time we matter is when its election time. Our schools are intolerable condition as well as the HUD homes that have been poorly structured thanks to the administrators who over look the programs from the Phoenix Office, Mr. Ferendez, Daylen Tanner and others who cannot get their hands dirty and make site visits to take a look at how the substandard homes were built. How can we as native people be proud of what these people are doing in their plush offices and well paid positions. Tribes need to seriously wake-up and terminate many of the blue collar crimes being committed on reservations. Especially, those that have Casinos. The enforcement arm NIGC just looks the other way. They get something under the table. The same way our tribal leaders are getting so corrupt.

  7. Where is the Media when it pertains to Indian Country, it appears they are not around. the tribes need to prepare themselves to create a place to store and stock supplies for the winter months or other forms of disaster. The NM area has been hit hard this winter also so we try to prepare for getting stranded for month at a time. Sometimes not even emergency vehicles can pick a person who needs immediate attention. Tribal leadership is not just there because their focus is on personal self gain. I wish that the Obama team could be more concern about how administration operates in Indian Country. We seriously need help especially when cold temps go down so much and the economic situation is doing so poorly that most people do not have jobs. The Health and Human Services give one 10 dollars/month for one person. They need to show us how we can make it on that for a month. Question these programs eveyone! get the word out and question the state reps. How is it possible to survive on that? Haiti is getting more help then us and our needs for many years. Yes folks! this is the truth. Anyone out there who has been fortunate, open your hearts and assist tribes that need assistance. You will be rewarded for your gift. We are human beings.
