Senate to Hold Hearing on Federal Recognition for Virginia Tribes

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold a hearing September 25 on legislation to recognize six Virginia Indian tribes. The House of Representatives has already approved the bill.

The bill, H.R. 1294, would qualify six of Virginia’s tribes for federal recognition and allow tribal members to receive services through the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service. The tribes are the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Indian Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Indian Nation and the Nansemond Indian Tribe.
