South Carolina College Abandons “Indians” Nickname

This week, Newberry College in South Carolina announced that it has dropped its “Indians” nickname and its sports teams will go without a name for about a year, as part of its agreement with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). According to press reports, it will cost the school $118,000 to remove the name/imagery from uniforms and equipment.

In 2005, the NCAA adopted a policy banning the use of Native American-offensive nicknames and mascots. Institutions with hostile or abusive references had to “take reasonable steps” to cover up the offensive references at any NCAA championship site that has been previously awarded, effective Feb. 1, 2006. Effective Aug. 8, 2008, institutions displaying or promoting hostile or abusive references on their mascots, cheerleaders, dance teams and band uniforms or paraphernalia are not allowed to wear the material at NCAA championships.

  1. The NCAA rule is ridiculous. The only Native American nicknames to be removed should have been only offensive ones like "Redskins." The Seminoles are proud that FSU continues to call their team the Seminoles. I would be proud of any team named the Muskogees.

What is the differnce between "Indians" and "Fighting Irish?"

  2. I have noticed that if I give a non-native person or a friend even a little room to joke about my race that it soon gets out of hand and it tend to give a signal to others that it is alright to belittle my culture, I choice from the start not to allow this type of behavior,

  3. I beleive that we have far larger problems in our Native American country than to worry about colleges of further education using our nicknames. I beleive that it brings about a rememberance of our culture. Address the needs of education, war on drugs, and other problems that our people are in need of.

  4. I realize that in some cases where a college has a local or regional Indian tribe as a mascot, that the local tribal leaders and/or majority from that tribe may not disapprove, or actually approve usage of their name.
