A
bill that would give the
Lumbees Tribe of North Carolina federal recognition has been voted out of the
U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and now goes to the full Senate for consideration. If the bill passes the Senate, the tribe would be eligible for millions of dollars in federal aid for education, health, economic development and housing. Federal officials estimate the tribe could receive $400 million over five years. It is uncertain when the bill will be brought before the Senate for a vote.
